The above beauties are not helping my (almost) poster addiction. Available in gold and in a glow in the dark version, it is just a little too pricey for me right now, but maybe you want to treat yourself? here.

Another ‘new’ England Shirt

Posted: September 3rd, 2010 | Author: Simon Mitchell | Filed under: England, Football, Graphic Design, Legends | Tags: , | 2 Comments »

This evening pretty much the entire team that disgraced their nation in South Africa this summer, take to the pitch once more competitively when they kick off their Euro 2012 qualification campaign. Whilst the generally considered overpaid bunch of ‘stars’ on the pitch will be trying to make ammends (hopefully) a large number of long suffering fans are likely to be proudly wearing their sparkling new England shirt, having forked out another £50 so soon after the last ‘new’ shirt.

This time however they will be sporting the minimal graphic detailing of a certain design legend by the name of Peter Saville. Design opinion is split it seems. Personally as I am pretty much in the creative business because of the wonderous early work of said Mr Saville, my Saville tinted glasses like the simple colourful detail, alas I also know enough about standing/sitting on the terrace to know that your average England fan ain’t going to get it.

When We Fly

Posted: August 27th, 2010 | Author: Simon Mitchell | Filed under: Graphic Design, Information Design | Tags: , | No Comments »

Whilst looking a little deeper at the work of Andrew van der Westhuyzen (my previous post), I happened upon the above equally as tasty little project titled ‘When We Fly’.

In an age where flying has become almost a reflex, just another mode of transport, the overall number of flights in the air at any particular point in time has reached truly staggering proportions.

According to the ACI(Airports Council International), in 2008, 4.874 billion passengers travelled by air on a total of 77 million flights. This particular view of the aerial next that spans the earth is based on one-minute snapshots of the number of passengers and planes in the air at a given moment in time – little blips on the global radar that add up to an impressive whole.

Very, very nice.

Tomato

Posted: August 27th, 2010 | Author: Simon Mitchell | Filed under: A cut above..., Graphic Design | Tags: , | No Comments »

Tomato a studio I had an enormous respect for when I was fresh out of Design School in the mid 90′s, in no part due to their fantastic collaborations and involvement with the superb Underworld. But until earlier this week, the years have somehow passed without me checking out their more recent work. But having done so and seen their work is still oh so nice, as shown with the two pieces of B&B Italia advertising above, it is only fair they get a first, and rather belated post on here.

If like me they have fallen off your radar, or you simply have never seen their work before, click here to be impressed.

I have seen a lot about Mr Phoenix’s is it real?is it not real? breakdown the last couple of days again, seemingly because the documentary (explaining all) is out in a few weeks. All I have to say about the whole affair, is, really nice poster!

Limited Edition Helvetica Poster

Keeping the Helvetica film merchandising alive, Swiss Dots, the producers of the Helvetica documentary, have create this new limited-edition screenprint for the film. The print is inspired by a 1960’s design that has been seen on D. Stempel AG brochurestype specimens and posters — which you may have noticed if you are a fan of the excellent Mad Men.

First up and a very nice place to start the ball rolling again is the above quite beautiful Letterpress project created by Ty Matteson to celebrate / announce the birth of his son Shepard.

Great stuff.
